Mission Statement

Extending mission critical information to the edge of the enterprise.

JumpStart History

JumpStart Wireless was founded in 2000 by Dr. Jeffrey Bonar, who earned his PhD in Artificial Intelligence. As an experienced entrepreneur, he recognized the market opportunity inherent in delivering mass-market wireless business software – a productivity breakthrough for an increasingly mobile and dispersed work force. Bonar assembled a veteran management team that draws on professional experience at Verizon, IBM, American Express, and Overture as well as start-up companies. The JumpStart product was released to the market in the summer of 2003 and now serves 30 customers and over 3000 users. The company has developed channel partnerships with Nextel, Verizon Wireless, IBM, RIM, Motorola, and Intuit.

Governing Principles

The JumpStart vision of the wireless world drives the underlying design principles of BusinessSuite:

Wireless technology requires a rich set of complex technologies best leveraged as a critical enhancement to existing software systems.

JumpStart is not interested in replacing existing software, but rather extending it to mobile staff who work at the edge of the enterprise. BusinessSuite is a reliable and secure strategy for moving corporate data from best-of-breed office software to the field, and then back from the field to the office.

Business forms” – like work orders, inspection reports, payroll timesheets, delivery orders, etc. -- are the best metaphor to visualize and implement wireless applications.

Wireless work is task focused and step-by-step oriented, like a form. Wireless work is poorly represented in a browser or by non-linear, random browsing.

Wireless applications no longer require expensive custom programming and time-consuming systems integration.

Just as companies no longer consider custom programming an accounting systems, forward-looking companies should no longer consider custom programming wireless software. BusinessSuite provides a much more reliable, secure, productive, and affordable approach than lengthy one-off, hand-coded projects.

Wireless applications should be device and carrier agnostic.

The world of wireless devices and applications is under intense development. Today’s cutting edge, breakthrough products are obsolete in 6 to 9 months and no longer available for sale. Business applications cannot afford to be dependent on such rapidly changing technology Screen sizes, keyboards, printers, and cameras undergo order of magnitude improvements with each new release. Along with the rapid innovation in devices, carriers announce ever faster and cheaper wireless data services. While exciting, this world demands that wireless applications work through generations of devices and networks without reprogramming. Broad investments in wireless software design, training, and deployment only happens when customers are assured that their investment will last 3-5 years with no changes required. Applications should “just work” on improved devices and networks.

Wireless applications should operate on low cost, mass-produced hand held devices and cell phones.

Much of the wireless press is focused on expensive, high-end, cutting edge devices designed for a small number of well-heeled technology fans. In the real business world, however, cost-conscious companies steer clear of the expensive devices and purchase low-cost and familiar products. Consequently, JumpStart focuses on practical, familiar, robust, and well understood mass-produced devices that allow affordable deployment to work teams with 1000s of field staff.

Practical, business-oriented wireless software must continue to operate, even when the device is disconnected from the network.

Wireless devices are commonly out of coverage as field workers go in and out of building cores, in and out of remote parts of town, and in and out of coverage shadows. Practical business applications demand that wireless solutions operate “non-stop”, i.e., a user must still work, even if they have lost connection to a wireless network. When back in coverage, all data should be transparently and reliably synchronized with the server.
